Steven Fletcher can stun Chelsea
Steven Fletcher is the one Wolves goal threat to have penetrated Chelsea.
Steven Fletcher is the one Wolves goal threat to have penetrated Chelsea.
But the £7m club record signing is willing to sacrifice personal glory for team gain when the two teams clash at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.
Like most of the rare goals Chelsea concede, Fletcher's proved of little consolation as the champions-elect beat Burnley 2-1 courtesy of John Terry's late winner last February after the striker cancelled out Nicolas Anelka's opener at Turf Moor.
"I got a goal against them last season and hopefully I can do that again," said the Scotland international.
"It was one of my favourite goals - Robbie Blake played me in and I took a touch past Alex and put it in the net."
Fletcher has continued his scoring instinct with three for Wolves, but recently his efforts have been more concentrated on doing a job for the team after being deployed at wide right as McCarthy opted to go one up front.
But it's a situation the 23-year-old accepts.
"The gaffer has changed it around and if he wants me to play wide - or anywhere - I'm happy to do it," he said.
"I've played that role a number of times in my career. When I was at Hibernian with Tony Mowbray he played me out there.
"If I don't get a chance as a central striker, I'll keep doing what I'm doing and hopefully score some goals while I'm playing out there.
"The gaffer said when I came there were lots of strikers here and if I had to do a job for the team I would."
Fletcher is still hoping for a chance as an orthodox striker however.
"I'm used to it wide, but I'm a striker and I like to play up front and if I get an opportunity, I'll try to take it with both hands," he said.
"Hopefully if I keep playing well and scoring out there and I'll get a chance up front.
"If I get in the positions and Matt Jarvis puts the ball across I can't complain - I have to put the ball in the net.
"I scored from a wide position at Tottenham and hopefully I can do it at Chelsea."
Wolves have been working on a gameplan for tomorrow's clash.
And while he admitted it's going to be difficult to get anything out of the game, Fletcher believes it's one the team should relish.
"When you're growing up, you want to play in these big games, so hopefully we can go there with confidence and spirit and can get something," he said.
"We're going there with a gameplan. We want to keep it tight - we don't want to play free-flowing football and then get caught on the break because Chelsea score lots of goals.
"Some people go there with a plan and yet after the first five minutes they're 4-0 down.
"So if we can go with an open mind and hopefully play the football we know we can - and stop the mistakes - we can get something.
"It would be nice to get a bit of luck instead of it going the other way."
Having suffered relegation in his only Premier League season, Fletcher is only too aware of the potential pitfalls.
But he is convinced Wolves have a stronger squad than the Clarets.
"I think this squad has got more of an opportunity to stay up again because of the experience of last season.
"At Burnley we were all quite new to the league and after beating Man United I think we thought we could win the league.
"I think this team has a lot more depth in it. We've played well in most games and if we keep playing well, the results will come."
Fletcher believes the drop taught him valuable lessons however.
"The bad experiences last season have made me a better player," he said.
"You have to learn how to deal with things like that and I think I've done that so far.
"The gaffer has given me another opportunity in the Premier League and I want to repay him for that.
"I don't want another relegation."
Fletcher is aware the nation has written off Wolves' chances for tomorrow and the next four games as they prepare to face the big four.
But he said that's only made the players more determined.
"We'll keep our heads down and do our jobs and hopefully we can get something out of this game and the ones coming up," he said.
