Academy product Palmer, 27, had to bide his time for a first-choice role between the sticks but broke through early last season.

A succession of non-league and Football League loans helped Palmer’s development and he thrived under Carlos Corberan last season.

Palmer, who turned down a move to Premier League Luton this summer, said: “Obviously the loans have helped massively, where I’ve generally been the oldest one there. It’s not new for me in a way (being oldest keeper), but it’s being at West Brom for so long and working under so many older goalkeepers and incredible goalkeepers as well – I could mention a few but obviously I’ve been here a while.

“The obvious ones are Ben Foster and Sam Johnstone, I took as much as I can from those and others, I’ve had to bide my time and I feel like I’ve got a good balance from those, it’s helped shape me to the goalkeeper I am.”
