'It still gives me goosebumps': Martin Albrechtsen on West Brom's Great Escape and record transfer burden
Becoming a club's record transfer can weigh quite heavy on the shoulders of a young player.
It can be particularly tough for a young defender making his first move into Premier League football - and to a club he knew hardly anything about.
Back in 2004, that was the case for Martin Albrechtsen, the then 21-year-old Danish defender, brought to West Brom by Gary Megson following Albion's promotion to the top flight.
At £2.7m he was the club's record transfer, a fee that has since been smashed multiple times.
But back then, it was big money for a club like Albion, and for Albrechtsen, who had trialled with Everton and Sunderland and had interest from AC Milan, before swapping Copenhagen for the Black Country, it was a big burden in his first season.
Discussing his career on the latest episode of the Baggies Broadcast, available from Wednesday, the Danish defender said he struggled to really live up to his price tag in his first year, despite helping Albion to the famous 'Great Escape'.
He said: "I had just won the title in Denmark and then I found out after the clubs had agreed a fee.
