The 20-year-old has been on the Baggies radar for a number of years following his impressive performances for Chelsea’s youth sides.

But last season saw him take that form into senior football after successful loan stints at both Charlton and Swansea.

Gallagher is now set to sign a new long-term deal at Stamford Bridge before joining a Premier League side on a temporary basis for the 2020/21 campaign.

And the Express & Star understands positive talks have taken place with Chelsea and the player’s representatives over a move to The Hawthorns.

As well as the Baggies, though, Leeds are also keen on Gallagher and hope to take him to Elland Road – with the midfielder potentially having to choose between the two promoted sides.

Earlier this month it had appeared Gallagher would join Crystal Palace on loan.

But they are now closing in on a deal to sign Michy Batshuayi on loan from Chelsea – another player who has interested Albion.

And Premier League rules state you can only sign one player on loan from another top-flight side.

As well as Gallagher, Albion are also continuing to hold talks with Benfica over a second loan for Filip Krovinovic.

Discussions with the Portuguese side are currently snagged on the terms of any future permanent transfer for the Croatian.

But the 25-year-old remains a priority target for head coach Slaven Bilic.

And it is expected Krovinovic will be an Albion player for the 2020/21 campaign.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have joined the race to sign out-of-favour Albion striker Kenneth Zohore, according to reports.

Zohore joined the Baggies from Cardiff last summer in a deal that could have been worth £8million if certain milestones were hit.

But the former Copenhagen man struggled to for game time and made just six starts for Slaven Bilic’s side.

With Albion still in the hunt for a striker this window – despite the arrival of Callum Robinson – it is understood Zohore has been made available for transfer.

Reports have suggested Neil Warnock is keen to take the striker to the North East with Middlesbrough.

But it is now believed Sheffield Wednesday are leading the race to land the 26-year-old.

As well as reports in the national press Zohore is set to move to Hillsborough, the striker is the latest footballer Att Chansiri – the son of Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri – has followed on Instagram.

Elias Kachunga, Chey Dunkley, Josh Windass, Connor Wickham, Alessio da Cruz and Massimo Luongo have all joined the Championship club after being followed by Chansiri on the social networking website.
