Slaven Bilic: Keep calm and carry on West Brom

Slaven Bilic says striking the right balance between remaining calm but playing with intensity is the key to Albion winning at Huddersfield tonight.

The Baggies head to the John Smith’s Stadium knowing they are two wins away from securing a place in the Premier League.

Danny Cowley’s side are sure to prove tricky opponents, particularly as they are not yet safe from relegation.

But with a wealth of attacking options including Matheus Pereira, Grady Diangana, Kamil Grosicki, Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu, Albion’s squad is bursting with quality.

And Bilic is confident his players will showcase that quality if they remain calm.

“Huddersfield will try and make it hard for us,” the boss said.

“Of course we have to think about Huddersfield.

“But we have to find that balance.

“We are burning inside. We have to burn but be completely calm because 90 minutes is a very long time. We can’t rush.

“We have to keep calm, knowing we have that quality and we can make it.

“It comes with the condition that we have to stamp our authority on the game from the start.

“Intensity, intensity, intensity. But we have to find that balance between intensity and not panicking – that is the key.”

Albion are being kept on their toes in the race for automatic promotion by Brentford – who won their eighth game in a row against Preston North End on Wednesday.

But Bilic said he and his players aren’t thinking about the Bees – with his team having had to cope with the pressure that comes with being in a promotion race ever since they got themselves in the top two back in September.

“We all feel good,” Bilic said when asked how the mood is in Albion’s camp.

“Huddersfield is an important game.

“We have those positive nerves, which is a good thing.

“We have worked the whole year to be in this position and for the whole year we have relied only on us.

“Other results can help you of course.

“But since round seven we have been there.

“You check other results, but 100 per cent you are just focused on you – it is in your hands.

“It has been like that since September.

“We are relying on ourselves.

“It’s a massive game against Huddersfield, but it’s a good position we are in.

“We are fully motivated, hungry to play with the right mentality and intensity.

“But the key is to be very calm and not let pressure affect your quality or performance.”

Meanwhile, Bilic has thanked Albion’s fans for everything they are doing in trying to help the team get over the line.

With all matches being played behind closed doors, supporters have decorated the bridge near The Hawthorns – known as Baggies Bridge – with scarves and flags.

A banner, paid for by fans, has also been placed in the ground thanking Chris Brunt for his efforts – with the legendary midfielder set to leave the club when the season ends.

“The fans are trying,” Bilic added.

“We are missing them, big time, like every other club is.

“We’re going to do everything for them.

“We are enough motivated, you know what I mean, without them.

“It’s two games to go now, and we can feel that they are right behind us.”
