A bucket collection will be held before and after the game against Wigan at The Hawthorns on Saturday for Acorns Hospice, with supporters being asked to give what they can to help the charity.

Acorns, which is based near the Baggies' training ground on Walstead Road, Walsall, needs to raise £2 million to ensure its survival. The charity is more than a quarter of a way towards its target and is continuing to appeal for support.

The leap-year fixture takes place on February 29 and ties in with Acorns' campaign calling on people to make the most of the extra day by donating to the cause.

Zoe Baggott, Acorns senior area and events fundraising manager, said: “We’re beyond grateful to West Bromwich Albion for allowing us to hold a bucket collection during their leap day fixture against Wigan for our Black Country hospice appeal.

“This is just one of a number of ways the club is supporting Acorns by helping to raise awareness of our work and our ongoing fight to save our hospice in Walsall. We hope Baggies fans will join the club and support our appeal by digging deep and giving generously on Saturday.

“Our leap day bucket collections are a great opportunity for Baggies fans and the general public to make their extra day count by supporting Acorns. Every penny raised will help us continue providing our vital care and support for local children and families. Please spare just a few hours of your time and join us on February 29.”

Albion chief executive Mark Jenkins said: “We’re all backing this appeal because this hospice plays a vital role in our community and we really must do all we can to help. The club have committed to a range of supportive initiatives and we are confident our fans will be dig deep on Saturday."
