Albion crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the first round the last tie these two sides met, losing 2-1 to Millwall at home.

West Brom took the lead nine minutes in with a close-range header from Charlie Austin following a rebound off the top of the crossbar.

Millwall equalised in the 28th minute with a pin-point set piece delivery from Jiri Shalek that was headed in by Tom Bradshaw.

Albion managed to put the ball in the back of the net just two minutes later from a corner, which looked to be a pivotal moment in the game, but was ruled out for a foul on Millwall in the box.

With the score at 1-1 when the second half kicked off, the game was there for the taking, but it was the visitors who soon led after another brilliant Shalek delivery from a corner with 55 minutes on the clock.

With Albion desperately trying to clear the ball, it was O’Brien who responded first, and stabbed home from close range.

Despite having 66% possession and five more attempts than the Lions, it was Millwall who were much more clinical on the day.

Following an impressive victory on the opening day of the season away at Nottingham Forrest, the Baggies were hopeful they would secure their first home win of the season.

The home side were dominant throughout the match, with a staggering 80% possession in the first half. They took a deserved lead in the 57th minute following an inswinging free kick from Matt Phillips which was headed home by Kyle Bartley.

However, West Brom were punished in the 75th minute when substitute Matt Smith converted from close range to equalise after a cross into the box ricocheted off an Albion defender.

The Baggies saw the better of proceedings throughout the match, with a long-range strike from Filip Krovinovic ruled out for offside, and a great save from Millwall goalkeeper Bialkowski who denied Kenneth Zohore from six yards out.

Albion ultimately failed to find that crucial second goal.

With the Championship season coming to a close, Millwall were desperate for a win to aid their chances of survival from relegation.

Millwall’s unrelenting desire proved the difference on the day after a dominating display against the Baggies gave them a convincing 2-0 victory.

West Brom’s slim chances of automatic promotion suffered a major blow with their problems often self inflicted.

A howler from goalkeeper Sam Johnstone gifted Millwall their first goal after the ball went straight through the hands of the keeper from a Ryan Tunnicliffe strike, rolling into the back of the net after 30 minutes of play.

Despite Albion creating next to nothing, with only one shot on target in the first half, they had an excellent chance to bring the score level when they were awarded a penalty on the hour mark.

However, Jay Rodriguez’s dreadful spot-kick failed to test the keeper, going wide of the left post.

Six minutes later it went from bad to worse for the Baggies when Hegazi put it in his own net to give Millwall a two-goal cushion.

Hegazi ended a dreadful afternoon with a second yellow card 10 minutes from time.

Newcastle loanee Dwight Gayle was Albion’s main source of goals in the 2018/19 campaign, getting on the scoresheet again in the Baggies' dominant home display against the London club.

The forward pounced in the penalty area and tapped home from close range after goalkeeper Ben Amos produced a stunning save to tip Helgazi’s header onto the crossbar.

Millwall had plenty of chances to open the scoring, including an ambitious 35-yard effort following a wayward kick from Albion keeper Sam Johnstone, which took a goal line clearance from Craig Dawson, sparing the keepers blushes.

Albion showed a lot of teeth in the second half however, with two goals within eight minutes, including a drilled shot from left-back Kieran Gibbs.

West Brom thoroughly dominated the match with a massive 66% possession and 16 attempts on goal.

The last time the two sides met in the league before the 2018/19 season was back in 2004, with the Championship still known as the League Division One.

Albion would see themselves promoted to the Premier League, but a 1-1 draw away to Millwall and two red cards gave the Baggies a bit of a scare with the season drawing to a close.

Millwall opened the scoring in the first half with Daniele Dichio scoring against his former club before Adam Johnson grabbed an equaliser in the second half.

A 43rd minute red card for Jason Koumas, and a 93rd minute dismissal for Thomas Gaardose, meant that Albion went down to nine men but still managed to leave London with a thoroughly hard earned point.
