Jake Livermore: Togetherness is firing Albion on

Skipper Jake Livermore believes Albion’s togetherness has been the main reason for their outstanding form this season.

Jake Livermore of West Bromwich Albion celebrates the win with a thumbs up to the travelling West Bromwich Albion Fans.

And the 30-year-old believes that team spirit is going to be crucial if they are to go on to win promotion to the Premier League.

The Baggies travel to take on Wigan tonight having won their last six games.

In contrast, the Latics are without a win in eight – with six of those ending in defeat.

Livermore, who has won seven caps for England, previously won promotion from the Championship while playing for Hull in 2016.

And the midfielder says his career has taught him that team’s are only successful if they stick together.

“I have been at clubs that have gone up and gone down and been challenging for titles and stuff and you do really, really need that,” he said.

“I think that’s what we’ve really built here – a bit of togetherness.

“It’s a long season, we are going to have a lot of games come up soon, they’ll be a lack of sleep, lots of travelling.

“You really need to have that togetherness and have everyone pulling in the same direction.

“I don’t want to speak to soon but that is definitely the culture we are trying to build here and with me holding the armband that is one thing I will try and instil until the end of the season.”

Livermore believes Albion’s togetherness doesn’t just exist in the team – with fans and the club’s staff all playing their part. But he says there is still a long way to go if the Baggies are to have a successful campaign.

“We have got a great togetherness that runs throughout the club in general,” the former Tottenham man continued.

“Everyone from the staff, from the fans we bump into, and the players.

“It’s nice to all reward each other, really.

“We’ve put a nice building block in place for ourselves but we are nowhere near where we need to be.

“There is over half of the season still to go, we have only just started.

“We are still developing relationships all over the field which is great.

“We have got a fantastic squad and a lot of credit has to go to the changing room because it’s been a real team effort so far.

“We have had some fantastic, outstanding, individual performances.

“But collectively we all know how important it is to push each other day to day.”

Despite being away from home, Albion are huge favourites to win tonight with Slaven Bilic’s side odds-on with the bookmakers.

But while they won at Stoke, their previous outing against a team in the bottom three saw them held to a draw by Barnsley.

And Livermore says that game is a reminder to all all Albion’s players that they cannot rest on their laurels.

“We won’t be resting on absolutely anything,” he said.

“We had Barnsley at home which looked like an inviting game but as we all know games are not played on paper.

“Wigan is definitely a challenge we are relishing. We treat every single game as if it is our last. We will be giving absolutely everything I can assure you of that.”

A major reason for Albion’s success this season has been Livermore’s partnership with Romaine Sawyers in central midfield.

In a previous interview, the former Tottenham star said Sawyers has the potential to be as good as many of the top midfielders he has played with.

And he revealed it’s Sawyers’ bravery on the ball that has impressed him most.

“He (Sawyers) has got no fear at all,” he added.

“You talk about brave players and when people do that they tend to look back to years ago – defenders who will kick people in the air. But that is not bravery in my opinion.

“Bravery is asking for the ball and helping your other 10 team-mates out no matter what time it is in the game and what position you are in.

“That is real bravery in my opinion and that is what he has got in abundance.”
