Charlie Austin a team man for West Brom
Slaven Bilic says he is pleased Charlie Austin is putting Albion’s long-term goals ahead of his own individual targets.
The striker, who is set to face former club QPR today, is yet to score in the league since his £4million move from Southampton.
But while Austin is yet to get off the mark, Matt Phillips, Grady Diangana, Keneth Zohore and Semi Ajayi have all scored two or more as Albion spread goals throughout the team.
Bilic, though, is adamant it is only a matter of time before Austin also finds himself on the score sheet regularly.
“I told him (Austin) do your job, play for the team – who are going to play for you – and it will only be a matter of time before things open up,” Bilic said. “Every striker needs goals. That’s why they’re special.
“But it is better (for goals to be spread out) than to have one guy who is scoring 90 per cent of your goals.
“If you are relying on him and he stops, or he gets injured, or he dips in form, you have to find someone else.
“It is better like this. But, of course, you expect it come. We are expecting our strikers to add to that.
“But Charlie is a player that likes to be involved in the game also.
“For a striker, the goals are a big part of their job and we are expecting them to come.
“Hopefully it will happen at QPR, but there is no negative pressure on him so long as the other guys around him are scoring.”
Austin moved to The Hawthorns on transfer deadline day back in August.
Prior to that, he had been training with Southampton’s under-23s.
And Bilic believes his centre-forward is getting stronger with each passing week.
“He’s showing improvement,” the head coach continued.
“We speak a lot – in the last game against Huddersfield, in the first half he was very important for us, he was very lively.
“He got the guys in the game, he was creating space for them. He had a couple of half chances, he didn’t score but I’m pleased with him.
“He’s part of the team that has scored three against Blackburn and four against Huddersfield.
“He didn’t score but he was in those actions and was involved.”
