West Brom defender Darnell Furlong delighted with freedom under Slaven Bilic

Darnell Furlong says he is enjoying the freedom that comes with playing for Slaven Bilic’s Albion.

The 23-year-old continued his impressive start to the season by putting in a man-of-the-match display as the Baggies secured a 4-2 win over Huddersfield on Saturday.

As well as netting his first goal for the club in that match, Furlong also played a key role in Matt Phillips’ first-half strike, with the defender nutmegging Terence Kongolo in the build-up.

And the right-back believes he is thriving at The Hawthorns because he is given the freedom to play on the front foot.

“I like to try things,” the former QPR man said. “I don’t want to get into the habit of nutmegging players every week.

“But in that situation, it was the right thing to do, it was a gamble but it paid off.

“Throughout the game, we had a lot of possession. And when you have a lot of possession you can get quite high as a full-back.

“You can play a bit more as an attacker.

“When we have got the ball it’s important for the full-backs to be up high and get in advanced positions.

“That causes problems. But I have to remember my duties are to defend and I will continue to try to do that.”

Albion’s start to the season has been incredible with Bilic’s side unbeaten in eight Championship games.

But they have fallen behind in seven of those matches – with the team having conceded some sloppy goals.

And while Furlong is happy with the start they have made, he knows they must improve.

“We do make it hard for ourselves,” he continued.

“We are a team that takes risks. But it is about doing it at the right time.

“Sometimes we do become unstuck.

“It’s something we need to work on and nail down.

“But we are unbeaten and one point off the top.

“That is a great platform to build on and we would have all taken it at the start.

“We want to be right at the top, but it’s not always going to be like that.

“We are just going to continue to try and stay unbeaten.”
