The Baggies have so far met with frustration in efforts to further bolster their squad, having added five new players to this point.

Talks are ongoing over deals for Sporting Lisbon winger Matheus Pereira and Basel striker Albian Ajeti, while a central defender is also on the radar.

Ideally, the club would have liked to get the bulk of their business done before tomorrow’s Championship curtain-raiser at Nottingham Forest. But while negotiations have proven more protracted than desired, the Baggies are prepared to stay patient as they look to land their preferred targets.

Boss Slaven Bilic admitted: “The number of players we have brought in is less than the players that left. The majority of those that left were regular players. We are still a little bit short. I would say three, ideally four players. We are looking to get them and it will be crucial for us to get them.

“This is a tough league and it is a marathon. It is about being consistent, having a squad and the quality. That is what we are trying to get in the last few days of the transfer window.”

Adding at least one more striker is a priority with Kenneth Zohore the only recognised centre-forward available for the trip to the City Ground.

Hal Robson-Kanu is suspended as he serves the final match of a three-match ban carried over from last season.
