The 37-year-old is due to have a two-week trial period with the League Two side, who hope to sign him on a permanent deal.

Former Villa assistant Colin Calderwood is currently Cambridge manager, and worked with Hoolahan when he was Chris Hughton's assistant at Norwich.

"I found out he was at this moment in time thinking about trying to play next year,” said Calderwood.

“It’s close to his home, but he also needs to enjoy it and think about whether he will.

“He is coming in the first two weeks with us. Rather than everyone thinking he’s signed, it’s just a starting point.

“The intention would be to convince him to sign."

The Republic of Ireland veteran is a free agent after being released by Albion at the end of last season.

He made 10 appearances for the Baggies, but didn't start a single league game.

He was initially contracted until January but earned an extension after impressing in the FA Cup.
