The 55-year-old, who managed Albion between 2012 and 2013, has signed up for the national job on a three-year contract having left Kilmarnock.

Clarke famously guided the Baggies to an eighth placed finish in the Premier League in 2013, memorably drawing 5-5 in what was Sir Alex Ferguson's final game in charge of Manchester United. He departed the club the following season.

Following a spell as Reading boss, Clarke was hired alongside Roberto Di Matteo at Aston Villa in 2016, but was not kept on at Villa Park following the Italian's exit and Steve Bruce's appointment.

The Scot went on to manage Kilmarnock, earning rave reviews north of the border, earning him the top job for the national side.

He replaces former Blues and Villa boss Alex McLeish, with Scotland sitting fifth in their Euro 2020 qualification group.

"I firmly believe we have a talented group of players who can achieve success on the international stage. I look forward to working with them and helping them to fulfil those ambitions." he said.

"I believe we can qualify and look forward to that journey with the players and the fans, starting against Cyprus and Belgium next month."
