Craig Dawson believes the Baggies are building up a head of steam that can cause a surprise in the promotion race.

Albion have won three games on the spin under caretaker boss James Shan, shaving the gap to the top two to six points in the process.

If they beat Millwall on Saturday at The Den, it will be the club’s longest winning streak of the season so far.

Shan still has his sights set on the automatic promotion spots and his players echo his thoughts.

Dawson doesn’t want the Baggies to reach the end of the campaign with any regrets, and has urged the team to put pressure on the teams above in the remaining seven games.

“We’ve got to keep momentum going,” he said. “Our mindset is very much about chasing the teams above us.

“Fair play to them in that they have kept a very consistent set of results going but we have to try to apply pressure and see if we can get in there.

“It’s the Championship and its reputation is all about how surprising things can happen over the final weeks of the season.”

Shan will take charge of the Baggies for the fourth time this weekend, and Dawson says the caretaker has been a steady hand on the tiller.

This match sparks a season-defining run of six games in 22 days at the business end of the Championship campaign.

“There’s a sense of momentum in the camp,” said Dawson. “Jimmy has kept things ticking over extremely well and we’re a tight group who are all pushing for the same thing.

“There’s a good sense of purpose about the squad. I still think there can be all sorts of twists and turns.

“What we’ve got to do is make sure when the dust settles on this season, we have given it everything.

“You don’t want to go into the summer with any ‘if onlys.’”

Three days after Saturday’s game with Millwall, the Baggies face another tough trip when they visit play-off chasing Bristol City on Tuesday night.

Although Millwall haven’t won any of their last five league games at The Den, they did beat Everton at home in the FA Cup and also took Brighton to penalties in that competition.

Lee Johnson’s men ended Sheffield United’s 10-game unbeaten run at the weekend with a dramatic 3-2 win at Bramall Lane that keeps them in the hunt for the top six.

Dawson is expecting two difficult, but different, tests in the space of four days.

“These are two tough, tough games,” admitted Dawson. “Millwall’s cup exploits showed just what a handful they are on their home patch and of course they pushed Leeds all the way to wire at the weekend.

“You know what sort of battle you are going to get.

“It’s going to be a very different challenge at Bristol City, who will be flying after winning at Sheffield United.

“But I think teams will be wary of us now, too. It’s back to that point about momentum.

"It’s so important for a team and we feel we have it. But we’ve got to keep going.”
