When Kyle Edwards was shown a video of his goal in the dressing room afterwards, he thought it looked better than he remembered it.

The Dudley lad went on a mazy run at the start of the second half on Saturday, jinking past two Brentford defenders before scrambling the ball home.

It was enough to give the Baggies a 1-0 win at Griffin Park, breaking Brentford's seven-game winning streak at home with Albion's second victory in a row since Darren Moore's sacking.

"A few people got the video up straight away," laughed Edwards afterwards. "Everyone was saying well done and that they're proud of me.

"Watching it back I thought it looked a bit better than I remember! I'll probably watch it back again to be honest and show my mum.

"My mum and my uncle travelled down from Dudley, it was good to score for them."

Edwards was handed his first league start for the club by caretaker boss James Shan, who first coached him at under-9s level. And the 21-year-old repaid Shan with a superb winner.

"I was about to shoot but last second I chopped in," he explained. "I was about to shoot again, and then chopped again.

"I was falling over and luckily I bundled it over the line! To be fair it's probably the best goal I've scored.

"It means a lot. I've been here since six-years-old, watching all the games.

"To be the one on the pitch and making an impact we need was a proud moment for me.

"Jimmy said just go out and enjoy yourself, do what you've been doing in training and the under-23 matches. He trusted me and thankfully it worked out well.

"I've been playing with him a long time, he knows what I can do, he trusts me on the pitch, that's why he threw me out there.

"It was a difficult game with the conditions, it was a defensive performance but think I managed it well.

"It gives you a big lift when the fans are shouting and cheering your name."

Shan dedicated the win to club secretary Simon Carrington, who passed away last week from cancer at the age of 34.

The caretaker revealed Carrington sent him a text on Thursday to wish him luck, and Edwards said everyone in the squad was eager to win for him.

"It's been a bit of a sad time with Simon passing over the past few day," said Edwards. "We'll dedicate the three points to him.

"He was at the training ground with us all the time, he was nice, we always said hello. We'd talk football and stuff, he was a good guy.

"He did a lot of work behind the scenes, we saw him every day, he was a nice person to talk to."

Edwards was one of the stand-out performers in pre-season but has found his chances limited mainly to cup competitions during the campaign.

When asked if he could cement a place in the team until the end of the season, he said: "All I can do is try and do my best if I get my opportunity. I'll try and do as much as I can."
