James Shan dedicates West Brom's win to club secretary Simon Carrington
Caretaker boss James Shan dedicated Albion's 1-0 win over Brentford to club secretary Simon Carrington, who lost a battle with cancer this week aged just 34.
Shan revealed that Carrington, an important member of Albion's operations behind the scenes, text him the day before his passing to wish him luck this weekend.
Carrington was diagnosed with an inoperable cancer in September last year, but continued to work from home despite his illness.
Albion wore black armbands today and both home and away fans joined in a minute's applause in memory of him in the 34th minute of the match.
"We’ve had some sad news at the club with the passing of Simon Carrington our club secretary," said Shan.
"I’d like to dedicate that to Simon and his family at what is obviously a sad time.
"The man text me on Wednesday evening and again on Thursday to wish me luck. No doubt Simon was looking down on us with that performance and that victory.
"Not only was he a fantastic servant, but an outstanding human being.
"He was a great character to have around the training ground. A wonderful man and as I say, it’s been a very sad few days."
Albion made it two wins from two since Darren Moore's sacking last weekend, thanks to another clean sheet and Kyle Edwards's wonderful solo goal six minutes after half-time.
Although they were second best in the first half of a game affected by the windy conditions, the Baggies grew into the game and were on top in the second period.
"It’s the power of zero," said Shan. "Those clean sheets are always important.
"If you can build momentum and a bedrock of clean sheets you’re always going to give yourself a chance.
"We had that mentality for the first 45 minutes against a very good football team who posed problems and against extremely difficult conditions.
"One of the first things I said to the boys at half-time was ‘don’t underestimate the conditions’. The weather can be a momentum builder.
"The back players were delighted we came in goalless against those conditions. We were always in the game with a chance of winning."
Edwards, who hails from Dudley, has been at the club since the age of six and worked under Shan in a number of age groups, from under-9s all the way up to under-23s.
He repaid Shan handing him his first league start for the club with a mazy goal of individual brilliance.
"I’ve got a lot of faith and trust in Kyle," said Shan. "I’ve worked with him since he was under-nine and I’ve watched performances like that at every age group.
"He’s a talented boy. He played with some real maturity. His goal was a special moment for im but also a special special goal and one he cam be very proud of.
"As an ex-academy coach, the biggest pride you get is seeing them perform on that platform.
"You always look and think they’ll have the potential to do it, but you don’t really know.
"Kyle has had bits and pieces this year with the cup competitions. I thought he was magnificent and there’s no doubt in the boy’s ability whatsoever."
Shan has led Albion to two wins and two clean sheets as caretaker, but he played down the notion he could be given the job until the end of the season.
"I’m just doing what I’ve been asked to do," he said. "The news on Saturday was just take the game on Wednesday then I had an inkling it would go a bit further to the game against Brentford.
"We’ve got three days off now. The board are obviously speaking to people and looking to make that appointment.
"We have a nice and timely three days off before we report back. Things have a potential to move on in that time."
