Craig Dawson delighted by West Brom character
Craig Dawson was thrilled with Albion’s victory at Swansea City on Wednesday night – even if the performance did not match the result.
Though the Baggies have been blowing away some of their rivals in the Championship this season – most notably, the 4-1 triumph over Leeds United – they had to grind out a 2-1 triumph in south Wales.
And the manner of that come-from-behind triumph pleased centre-half Dawson.
“It’s a massive three points and we worked very hard,” he said. “It wasn’t the best performance but the three points is what matters.”
After Oli McBurnie put the Swans into an early lead at the Liberty Stadium, Dawson levelled when he headed home Matt Phillips’ corner at the back post.
And Albion then repeated the trick – this time though it was Ahmed Hegazi the beneficiary of a corner aimed towards the back post by Phillips.
“It’s something we worked hard on training pitch and it’s nice for us both to get a goal,” added Dawson.
While the goals were obviously crucial in turning the match around, it was Albion’s defensive solidity that helped them see the game out – along with a good dose of ‘character’.
“We limited their chances and showed good character to come from a goal down,” said Dawson. “There’s a lot of characters in the dressing room – togetherness is high.
“It’s important we keep our run going and the fans stay behind us.
“The clean sheets will come but the most important thing is we’re winning football matches.”
Despite being stranded in mid-table under new manager – and former Baggie – Graham Potter, Swansea have the third best defensive record in the Championship.
Their 19 goals conceded is only bettered by Middlesbrough (10) and Leeds (17), while Albion have conceded 27. The Baggies though have scored almost double the number Swansea have – 41 to 21.
“It’s a difficult place to come and they’re a very good side,” added Dawson. “It’s a very important win for us to keep our run going and we’ll keep working hard on the training pitch to continue the performances.”
A home game against Brentford follows on Monday night before a derby date with a resurgent Villa the following Friday.
And Dawson said: “There’s a lot of tough games coming but the group is strong.”
