Matt Phillips raring to go for West Brom after winning promotion with Scotland
Matt Phillips will be ready and raring to go for Albion tomorrow night – despite his quick turnaround from international duty.
The 27-year-old helped Scotland clinch a play-off place for Euro 2020 with promotion from Group C1 of the Nations League on Tuesday night.
But he’s returned to the Baggies in buoyant mood after back-to-back wins with his nation, and head coach Darren Moore isn’t overly worried about fatigue.
“We’ve been speaking to Matty all the time he’s been up there, he’s in a good place mentally,” said Moore.
“I saw him Wednesday morning, he seemed full of confidence, very chatty.
"We will take into consideration the travelling he’s done, he’s been recovering. But physically he’s fine, fit, strong, healthy and well.”
Phillips has been a crucial cog in the Albion team this season, scoring five goals from just six shots on target.
He sparkled against Leeds United last time out in a new central role on the right side of a midfield three.
“When we come up with these ideas and plans, we need the players to buy in to them,” said Moore. “He’s taken to it.
"I think Matty enjoyed the role, he played like he did and did a great job for the team.
“I was pleased that with all that dogged work off the ball he had force and momentum on the ball and he scored a good goal – if you don’t buy a ticket you won’t win the raffle.
“He made the goal by tackling and driving us up the pitch. It’s another string to his bow. In future if we want him to play in that position we will be able to.”
Moore only has defender Kyle Bartley as a doubt for Friday’s trip to Ipswich with both Chris Brunt and Gareth Barry back in training.
And he was relieved to get both Phillips and Ahmed Hegazi back from international duty in one shape.
After three international breaks in the space of three months, the Baggies boss is pleased to see the back of them until March.
“I suppose every manager feels the same about players going away on international duty,” he said.
“We’ve got more midweek games this season, so to get them back off international break it’s always a relief that there’s no strains or knocks.
“The next one isn’t until March now so it gives us continuity and players in the building to work on things and move things forward.”
