The 22-year-old joined the Latics on a short-term emergency loan after Oldham's keeper Daniel Iversen was called up by Denmark's under-21 side.

And Palmer helped the mid-table League Two outfit beat Cambridge United 3-1 on Saturday.

Palmer conceded a long-range 'worldie' in the first half but made a crucial save while his side were trailing 1-0 before the Latics made a second-half comeback.

"Three points on my league debut for a great club like Oldham," tweeted the keeper. "Lads fought back brilliantly! Thanks for the support and warm welcome!"

Oldham manager Frankie Bunn was pleased with the shot-stopper's performance.

“They've scored a worldie past a young lad making his league debut,” said Bunn.

“It was a great strike by them, I thought we didn't put enough pressure on the ball and their bench were just saying shoot within 30 yards of goal.

“I think they had three shots and scored one, but to be fair to Alex (Palmer) he's pulled off a great save at one nil, a one-on-one on the counter attack."

Palmer, who is under contract until next summer, is currently fourth-choice at The Hawthorns behind Sam Johnstone, Boaz Myhill and Jonathan Bond.

He has been on the bench for Albion three times but has not yet made a senior appearance for the Baggies. He returns from Oldham this week.

Defender Dara O'Shea also featured in League Two over the weekend, playing 90 minutes for Exeter City in their 2-2 draw at home to Northampton.

It was the 19-year-old's first league start of the season for the Grecians.

Midfielder Alex Bradley played just over an hour for Havant and Waterlooville in their goalless draw with Chesterfield in the National League.
