The 25-year-old goalkeeper will hand the Baggies a boost by making his first appearance of pre-season in the clash with League Two Coventry City.

Johnstone became boss Darren Moore’s first signing when he joined in a £6.5million deal from Manchester United earlier this month. But the groin problem has kept him sidelined until now.

Johnstone said: “It’s been a bit frustrating. I had this problem that we had to manage. I am more or less there now.

“It’s part of playing football. You get knocks. The physios have been great with me.”

The Regis Shield is the first of what is hoped will be an annual event celebrating the life of legendary striker Cyrille, who starred for both Albion and Coventry during his career.

A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Cyrille Regis Legacy Trust, a charity being set up by his family.

“It’s a privilege to play in, to celebrate his career and his life,” said Johnstone.

“It is good the club are doing this as a yearly thing. I am sure the crowd will show their respect.

“It will be a new thing for me as well. It is good the game is at The Hawthorns. I have never played there before. It will be good to get into the surroundings. I can’t wait to get going.”

He added: “The mood in the camp is good. Training has been sharp. The lads have got on with it really.

“We can’t now for the first game of the season.”

Johnstone’s fellow summer signings Kyle Bartley and Harvey Barnes are also set for their first taste of The Hawthorns.

Tickets for the game are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for disabled supporters and under-18s.

Reports linking Albion with a move for Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo are, meanwhile, thought to be be wide of the mark.
