Kevin Campbell: Fractured West Brom are doomed
Great Escape striker Kevin Campbell says Albion are ‘doomed’ this season because the squad is fractured.
The 48-year-old, who helped the Baggies stay up in the 2004/05 season, has admitted that he can’t see the club replicating those heroics this time around.
Campbell believes there is disharmony in the group after four senior players allegedly stole a taxi in Spain while breaking club curfew and Chris Brunt’s dressing room rant after the Huddersfield game was exclusively revealed by the Express & Star.
But even though the current crop have only won three games all season, the former Arsenal forward reckons the best way to bounce back up to the Premier League next season is by keeping as many of them at the club as possible.
“It’s a difficult one for West Browmich Albion,” he told TalkSport. “That was a big game against Huddersfield on Saturday and they didn’t really turn up.
“It’s very difficult for Alan Pardew at the moment, unfortunately they’re doomed.
“When the senior players are causing major problems, the incident (in Spain) has been well documented, then you know there are problems at the club.”
Campbell scored three goals for the Baggies during the Great Escape after joining them in January 2005 on a free transfer towards the end of his 19-year playing career.
He says dressing room arguments are regular occurances, but believes the worrying thing is that the news was leaked.
“Rows do happen in dressing rooms all the time,” said Campbell. “We’re all accountable for our performances. But there’s a fracture in that West Bromwich Albion make up and these things are starting to come out.
“Things only come out when there are major squad issues."
Brunt has been lauded by supporters for criticising his team-mates' lack of effort in the 2-1 defeat at home to the Terriers that has left the Baggies seven points from safety and destined for the drop.
And Campbell also praised the Northern Irishman for showing some fight in the dressing room.
"It’s not a nice thing to happen but someone’s got to shine a light on it because it needs to be addressed,” he said.
Albion’s fans turned on the players during Saturday’s defeat to Huddersfield, singing: ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ before rounding on head coach Alan Pardew in injury time.
There are concerns among supporters that after eight years in the Premier League, the squad is not geared up for the challenge of the Championship like it was when Albion were a yo-yo team under former owner Jeremy Peace.
But Campbell reckons there is enough quality in the team to get the Baggies promoted next season and believes wholesale changes this summer is not the way forward.
“I’d keep the majority of the squad together, so if they go down they’ve got a great chance of coming straight back up,” he said.
