The club has confirmed four players are currently being investigated and could face disciplinary action.

According to reports, Catalan's regional police force said the players involved wanted to go out in Barcelona but found everything closed, so took a taxi to a fast-food restaurant.

When they left, it is alleged they took the taxi back to the hotel without the driver. Police were called to the hotel and the taxi driver was reunited with his vehicle at around 8am.

Alan Pardew’s relegation-threatened squad had been in Spain for warm-weather training, flying out on Tuesday morning.

They were due to return to the UK on Friday, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup fifth round tie with Southampton.

The incident is understood to have taken place after players returned from a night out.

A source in Spain told the Express & Star that several players returned drunk at 6am and placed a set of taxi keys on the counter at reception.

Shortly afterwards, the taxi driver and a policeman arrived at the hotel before the matter was resolved amicably.

The One Hotel were contacted but declined to comment on the incident.

The trip was initially due to be for a week but then the Baggies beat Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup and it had to be cut to three days.
