West Brom 2 Southampton 3 - Player ratings
Albion lost 3-2 at home to Southampton on Saturday in a damaging defeat that leaves them four points adrift at the bottom of the table. Here, we rate the players.
Ben Foster
Nothing he could have done about the first two goals, and he claimed crosses well, but he left too much of a gap for James Ward-Prowse to aim at with his wall. 6/10
Craig Dawson
Struggled to deal with Boufal and misplaced almost half of his passes. Stopped Southampton scoring a fourth with an important toe. 5/10
Gareth McAuley
Won seven headers at the back but lost Carrillo on too many occasions. Captain for the day, and kept going until the end, but lack of pace showed. 5/10
Ahmed Hegazi
Scored early on with a towering header and did well to cover some of his fellow defenders, but he and McAuley are too slow a partnership. 6/10
Allan Nyom
Put in a couple of decent crosses early on with his weaker foot but was defensively suspect and unable to steal the ball off Southampton. 5/10
Matt Phillips
Perhaps the attention on his midweek challenge on Brahim Diaz affected him, because his weak tackle in the build-up to Southampton’s first goal was disappointing. Looked like building a good partnership with Sturridge early on, but tailed off dramatically. 5/10
Claudio Yacob
Brought in for Krychowiak but lacked the same energy. Left Barry too much to do and allowed too many pockets of space to emerge. 4/10
Gareth Barry
Picked up an early booking that hampered him from then on. Unable to get near Lemina, and tired towards the end. 5/10
Chris Brunt
May have misplaced the odd pass, but he set up both goals with typically brilliant deliveries, sent Sturridge through for his best chance, tested McCarthy with one free-kick, and nearly scored with another clever one under the wall. 7/10
Daniel Sturridge
Showed flashes of potential with lightning-quick feet and a couple of times he rolled his defender, but did not test McCarthy. 6/10
Salomon Rondon
Even though his goal came off his shoulder, the Venezuelan deserved a slice of luck after another battling performance. Pardew is obviously a fan, and he’s likely to keep his place after this. 7/10
Substitutes
Oliver Burke (Yacob 62)
Caught the eye with his pace, and was unlucky the ball ran away from him when he nearly went through on goal. 6/10
Jay Rodriguez (Sturridge 62)
Too much to do by the time he came on. 6/10
James McClean (Nyom 77)
Misplaced the odd pass. 5/10
Unused: Myhill, Jameson, Field, Harper.
