You need to go back 50 years to find the last time West Brom lifted the famous old trophy, the same year The Baggies last faced Liverpool in the competition.

It took three games to finally decide a winner in the quarter-final, with a goalless draw at The Hawthorns followed by a 1-1 result in the first replay at Anfield.

Without penalties to decide a winner, a second replay took place at Maine Road in Manchester, a game which Albion famously won 2-1 on the day, in front of 56,000 fans.

Jeff Astle and Clive Clark netted the goals for The Baggies that day, with Tony Hateley bagging for the Reds.

West Brom 1 Liverpool 2: January 9th 1965

Liverpool were the side that lifted the Cup in 1965, despatching Albion in the third round without needing a replay.

Goals from Roger Hunt and Ian St John saw Bill Shankly's side into the lead, and whilst Astle made them sweat for the final ten minutes with an 80th minute goal, they held out for the win.

The game was not short of drama however, with Robert Cram missing a spot kick given away by Liverpool skipper Ron Yeats.

That penalty was awarded to Albion after Yeats heard what he thought was the referee's whistle with the ball in his penalty area. He went on to pick up the ball, only for the whistle to have come from the stands, gifting Albion the spot-kick for hand ball.

West Brom 2 Liverpool 0: January 14th 1933

West Brom only made the fourth round in 1933, but did get the better of the Reds in the third round of the competition that year.

A first half goal from Stan Wood saw the Baggies into the lead, before Fred Everiss's side doubled their advantage on the hour mark with Billy Richardson hitting the back of the net.

The game ended 2-0 at The Hawthorns that day, but Albion tasted defeat just two weeks later at the hands of West Ham, who themselves lost in the semi-finals to eventual champions Everton.

Liverpool 0 West Brom 1: January 28th 1922

It was a second round tie which pitted the two teams against each other in 1922, with Albion leaving Anfield with a 1-0 win under Everiss's guidance.

Stan Davies struck within the first 10 minutes to settle the tie as David Ashworth's side couldn't break down a resolute Baggies defence.

That would be Albion's last win in the competition that season however, as they couldn't top Notts County in the third round.

Despite holding them to a 1-1 draw at home, County went on to knock Albion out 2-0 in the third round replay.

West Brom 2 Liverpool 1: February 21st 1900 - Replay

After famously thrashing local neighbours Walsall 6-1 in their first round replay, Albion were rewarded a second round tie with Liverpool in February 1900.

With no winner decided in the first clash between the sides at Anfield, West Brom hosted the Reds at the old Stoney Lane ground four days later, topping them 2-1.

The first-half offered little in the way of goals, but Tommy Robertson bagged for Liverpool a minute into the second period.

Goals from Archibald Dunn and John Chadburn proved enough for Albion to secure passage to the next round, which they went to lose 2-1 to eventual runners-up Southampton.
