Well, after Boxing Day, I’m far more confident than I was before kick-off.
I thought we carried the game to Everton, and looked far more of a threat without breaking the deadlock.
Here lies the big problem. While I don’t think Salomon Rondon is the answer by any stretch, the fact remains he is miles better than anything else we have at the minute.
As soon as he went off, we weren’t the threat we were when he was on the pitch.
We desperately need a forward, so with the Financial Fair Play regulations hampering us, I think we have no option but to sacrifice Jonny Evans to bring a forward in.
If rumours are believed, Glen Johnson would be a good choice as a short-term right-back, allowing Dawson to move into Evans place may be the way to go.
The issues we have are all testament to awful player recruitment over a number of windows.
We had over £40m worth of alleged talent either on the bench or in the stands last Saturday and on Boxing Day. A club our size simply cannot afford that.
When we spend, for example, £15m on a winger, he needs to come in and improve us straight away, we are not big enough to buy potential.

There have been some positives to take from our most recent game against Everton, with the amount of chances we created and how we controlled almost the entirety of the game.
However, a lack of goals is becoming more and more of a concern with each week that passes.
The one area that certainly needs reinforcements in January is in the forward department.
It may seem unfair to compare the two, but when you consider that Harry Kane has scored more hat-tricks than our main striker Salomon Rondon has scored goals in 2017, it’s clear to see that additions are needed.
It’s true that we are having more opportunities in front of goal, but it seems as though every game these chances are being spurned.
These aren’t just half-chances, they are golden opportunities which need to be taken when you consider the predicament that we are currently in.
Defensively we improved against Everton, but our inability to score goals doesn’t seem to be going away.
We have been linked to a couple of strikers, but ideally we need ones with proven Premier League experience who can hit the ground running and move us out of the relegation zone.

At Stoke, despite greater possession, we still ended up pointless as our problems in front of goal continued.
Alan Pardew claimed we should have got something out of the game, but with Foster already off on his holidays every five minutes, Hal Robson-Kanu tripping like the light brigade and the rest of the team void of decisive talent, we really are in the deep stuff.
Over the last few games we have changed,we have become more positive but still unwarranted errors beset us.
It’s no good going forward more than before if no-one can find the onion bag, and the stark reminder is we do not have an out and out goalscorer.
It’s not quite panic button time, and hopefully Pardew can wave his magic wand in January and buy a striker who might bag us six or seven goals to keep us up.
The desire is there, the effort is there, just not the talent, and this is supposedly the best we have had for years.
