West Brom's Ben Foster named among top three English goalkeepers
Ben Foster is in the top three English goalkeepers in the Premier League and should be in Gareth Southgate’s squad, according to statistics from the past two seasons.
The Baggies No.1 is ranked third behind Burnley’s Tom Heaton and Everton’s Jordan Pickford in saves made per goal since the start of last season.
Foster makes 2.92 saves for every goal he concedes, a better rate than Fraser Forster (2.75), Jack Butland (2.42) and Joe Hart (2.3).
Heaton, who is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, tops the list with 4 saves for every goal and Pickford, who played against Germany last Friday, comes second with 3.34.
Foster went to the World Cup in Brazil and kept a clean sheet against Costa Rica in the final game of the group stage. But he hasn't been named in an England squad since November 2014.
Although the 34-year-old has not officially retired from international football, he has told chiefs at St George's Park that younger keepers should be picked ahead of him.
However, he would answer the call if an injury crisis befell the rest of England's options. He previously retired from international football in 2011 before making himself available again in 2013.
Foster was named supporters' player and players' player of the year for Albion last season. The research was done by betting company called BetStars.
They also found that Foster was the third-best performing goalkeeper against the 'big six'. Craig Dawson was the best performing right-back against the top sides.
