The £15million winger snatched a consolation 17 minutes from time during a 2-1 defeat to Coventry City in Albion's final Checkatrade Trophy match of the season.

It was a powerful solo effort from the former RB Leipzig man, who came in off the right wing and bundled through two sky blue defenders before firing a low shot into the far corner from a narrow angle.

He grabbed his goal in front of the 43 Albion fans who braved the game, and deserved some joy after a testing evening at the hands of some rough challenges.

Burke needed treatment four times in total after being caught on the knee, the shin and the back of the head by Coventry players. He also landed awkwardly after a header.

The 20-year-old was Albion's most dangerous player on the night, and flitted in between right-wing and up front.

His goal came in the 73rd minute and gave the young Baggies a lifeline after they conceded two in three minutes around the hour mark.

The young Baggies have lost all six of their Checkatrade Trophy games from the past two seasons and are now out of the competition.

But Albion boss James Shan can take heart from the fact his team matched the holders Coventry - who made 10 changes themselves - for the first hour.

Burke was in the thick of the action in the first half, setting Callum Morton up for a good chance, although Coventry had a goal ruled out for offside when Chris Stokes's cross was tucked home by Stuart Beavon.

Albion started the second half brightly, but just as they were enjoying a brief spell of pressure, the impressive Ben Stevenson put the hosts ahead with a superb curling effort from the edge of the area after beating his man in midfield.

And that goal seemed to rattle the Baggies because Coventry added another just three minutes later when Max Biamou nodded in a simple header at the back post from a corner.

It was the striker's first goal for Coventry since arriving from Sutton United in the summer.

Albion fought back though, and they nearly reduced the deficit shortly after when Finn Azaz hit the outside of the post on the rebound after his initial shot was well saved by Liam O'Brien.

Burke managed to do exactly that with a tidy finish 17 minutes to go, but the League Two side saw out the win comfortably.
