Kieran Gibbs: Fearless West Brom must show teeth at Huddersfield Town
Kieran Gibbs says Albion must approach their huge game with Huddersfield Town with ‘no fear’.
The Baggies travel to the John Smith’s Stadium this Saturday with pressure building on head coach Tony Pulis following a run of no win in nine games in all competitions.
A disillusioned fanbase kept their anger shackled for the most part during the gutsy defeat to Manchester City because of the superior opposition.
But the Baggies have only won once on their travels in the league in 2017, and another unacceptable performance on the road following their limp defeat at Southampton may turn the sold-out away end.
Supporters have been disappointed with Pulis’s cautious set-up away from home but Gibbs says the team must go out and get all three points.
“It’s a big game,” he admitted. “We have to go there with no fear at all and go to try and win the game.”
Albion are just two points above the bottom three and with daunting fixtures against Chelsea and Tottenham following the trip to Huddersfield, there is plenty riding on the match.
Gibbs agreed it was a crucial game, and the left-back is eager to get his first win in Albion colours since his £5m move from Arsenal.
He’s also keen to enter the third international break of the season on a positive note after the Baggies were forced to stew for a fortnight on late equalisers in each of the last two.
“It’s really important. It’s just before the international break, so we need to make sure we’re all fully focused,” said Gibbs.
“Huddersfield is not an easy place to go so we have to be ready for that then regroup over the international break.”
Those late goals still rankle with Gibbs, who says Matt Phillips’s late consolation against City proves the team have learned their lesson from recent weeks and are fighting until the end.
“You can’t switch off at any point,” he said. “We’ve had games where we’ve gone 1-0 or 2-0 up and teams have done that against us, they don’t give up and manage to get a draw in a game we should have won.”
