How were the players rated? (AMA)

Ben Foster

Almost caught out by Obiang’s audacious attempt. Took a risk by coming out to challenge Hernandez but denied the striker a golden opportunity. 6/10

Craig Dawson

Cut out countless crosses from Aaron Cresswell as the Hammers looked to bombard the Baggies during the second half. Quiet in final third. 6/10

Jonny Evans

Looked much more like his usual self after an uncertain performance at Brighton. One sticky moment in the first half when he misjudged Zabaleta’s cross. 7/10

Ahmed Hegazi

One week on from a rather unsteady performance at Brighton, the Egyptian international was on surer ground against a West Ham team which regularly took the aerial route towards targetman Andy Carroll.

It was the Baggies new-boy who won countless headers and made numerous clearances though. 7/10

Kieran Gibbs

A bright full debut. Showed a willingness to push on and came closer to scoring than any other Albion player with a shot which was blocked. 7/10

Grzegorz Krychowiak

A very encouraging performance from the Poland international on his home debut, with some real touches of class. Will only get better. 7/10

Gareth Barry

Not one of the more memorable 632 games in which he has played. Comfortable on the ball and displayed his eagle-eye for a pass. 7/10

Matt Phillips

Aside from one driving run to set up Morrison’s big chance, this was another quiet performance from the winger. Albion are a different proposition when he is on song. 5/10

James Morrison

Should have done better with a free header eight yards out. Albion did not create a better chance in the 90 minutes. The Scotland international failed to kick on from his encouraging cameo at Brighton last week. 5/10

Chris Brunt

Arguably Albion’s most effective attacking player, the Northern Ireland caught the eye with some tidy passing, despite being positioned out on the right wing. 6/10

Jay Rodriguez

Chosen to the lead the line with birthday-boy Salomon Rondon dropping to the bench but struggled to provide Albion with a focal point in attack. 5/10

Substitutes

Hal Robson-Kanu (for Brunt, 72)

Had an attempt on target. 6/10

James McClean (for Phillips, 76)

Provided some width.

Allan Nyom (for Gibbs, 84)

Replaced the tiring Gibbs.

Subs not used: Yacob, Rondon, McAuley, Myhill (gk).
