West Brom midfielder Jake Livermore expected back for Arsenal clash

Albion boss Tony Pulis expects Jake Livermore to return for next Monday’s trip to Arsenal after granting the “mentally drained” England international time off.

Livermore was missing from the squad for Saturday’s 0-0 draw with West Ham at The Hawthorns.

Pulis later described the 27-year-old midfielder as “jaded” from a hectic first nine months with the Baggies, following his £10million January move from Hull.

Livermore has been a regular for Albion in the Premier League, while also earning an international recall.

Pulis said: “Physically Jake is fine but mentally he just feels a little bit tired.

“I think for the first time going away with England during the summer and then having these two call-ups, I think playing all the time has really, really taken it out of the boy.

“We had a chat at the beginning of the week. Jake came to see me.

“He has felt a little bit jaded, mentally more than anything else. We checked all of his running stats and his data and he had dropped off a bit. So we are going to give him a couple of days off.

“He is such a good player for us that we don't want to risk him going into a deeper, deeper, deeper hole. It is nothing negative.”

Livermore, who had started all four of Albion’s Premier League games prior to Saturday, will miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie with Manchester City after being given a few days away to recharge the batteries.

He will be back in contention for next week’s trip to the Emirates, when Pulis also hopes to have playmaker Nacer Chadli available again.

The 28-year-old, yet to feature in the Premier League this season, has returned to Belgium for treatment on a thigh muscle injury.

Albion failed to score for the first time this season as they were held at home in a drab encounter with the Hammers.

Pulis, who was also without winger Oliver Burke due to a hamstring injury, said: “There are still one or two we want to bring into the team who will add good competition and good quality, particularly in the final third.

“Nacer has gone away to have treatment for a couple of days with a specialist he has worked with before.”
