The 24-year-old, who is an Austrian international, has been a long-term target for Tony Pulis with the boss hopeful of completing a deal for the centre-back in the coming days.

Wimmer has been made available by Spurs and looks set for a move to the Hawthorns after Pulis opted against making a renewed bid for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson.

A move for Wimmer will increase speculation Baggies skipper Jonny Evans is set for a big money move to Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola saw an £18million bid rejected for the former Manchester United man and it's understood City chiefs are preparing a second offer.

But the Express and Star understands Albion's move for Wimmer is not linked to City's interest in Evans.

Pulis has been eager to add a younger centre-half to his squad all summer following the departure of Jonas Olsson and with Gareth McAuley set to celebrate his 38th birthday in December.
