The incident happened during his side's 5-0 win over AFC Wulfrunian's, less than a week ahead of the cup clash.

With Hughes given the opportunity to add an extra goal to the scoreline from the spot, the 41-year-old ran up to strike the ball, only to suffer a freak quad injury on the run up, an injury likely to keep him out for an extended spell.

"I had some bad luck to be fair." Said Hughes, who's joint manager of the Midland Football League Premier Division side.

"Just as I went to strike the ball my quad popped, so it [my leg] just dangled really, I couldn't get no power. It felt like my leg was hanging off.

"I'm disappointed in that. It could happen any time a game but it had to happen on a penalty."

Hughes' penalty was scuffed wide due to the injury, and the veteran forward was immediately brought off, but the injury is likely to rule him out for a while.

"I'm going to see a couple of physios tomorrow maybe," he said.

"That'll give me an indication of how long I'll be out for."
