Middlesbrough are reportedly set to offer Albion target Ben Gibson a bumper new deal in an effort to stave off interest in the defender.

England international Gibson has been the subject of three failed bids from the Baggies, the latest of which is believed to have been worth up to £21million including add-ons.

But Middlesbrough, relegated from the Premier League last season, have no wish or need to sell the 24-year-old, with reports now claiming he will be offered improved terms in order to remain on the Riverside.

Gibson still has four years remaining on his current deal but Boro chiefs want him to stay for at least another season and lead the club’s push for promotion from the Championship.

Tottenham have also been linked but any move is thought to depend on whether or not they sell Kevin Wimmer, another defender with whom Albion have been linked.

Striker Jay Rodriguez and centre-back Ahmed Hegazi remain the Baggies only summer acquisitions to this point but boss Tony Pulis is desperate to get more deals done.

A permanent deal for Bournemouth defender Marc Wilson, who spent the second half of the season on loan at the The Hawthorns, remains a possibility.
