Albion boss Tony Pulis has angered the FA by pulling Sam Field out of next month's Under-19 European Championships.

The 19-year-old has been a regular in Keith Downing’s England side during qualification and is one of the few players in the squad with Premier League experience.

But Field hasn’t travelled out to Spain with the squad for their pre-competition training camp after Pulis pulled him from contention.

The Welshman wants the teenager to go to his pre-season camp in Austria, which is scheduled for the same time as the Euros, especially after the Baggies lost fellow central midfielder Darren Fletcher to Stoke City.

Albion have also lost Gareth McAuley, James Morrison and Hal Robson-Kanu to injury this summer and do not want to risk Field picking up a problem.

But the decision has annoyed those behind the scenes at the FA, particularly because it is not the first time Pulis has withdrawn one of Albion’s promising youngsters from an international tournament.

Last year, Jonathan Leko didn’t play in the under-17 European Championships because Albion's head coach wanted to use him in the final two games of the season.

In May this year, Kane Wilson was withdrawn ahead of the same competition. The young full-back was said to have an ankle injury, although he was named in the Albion squad away at Burnley four days later.

While there was a degree of sympathy for Pulis when the season was still ongoing, withdrawing Field from a summer tournament has caused more of a stir.

England start their U19 Euros campaign on Monday, July 3, and the final, should they reach it, is on Saturday, July 15.

Albion report back for pre-season on July 3 and travel out to Austria on Wednesday, July 5.

They do not currently have a game scheduled until Wednesday, July 19, when they play Leicester City in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong.

However, Pulis puts a lot of emphasis on his annual training camp, and with Field in line for more first-team action next season, he wants the teenager to join the Baggies squad in Austria.

But the decision has come during a booming period of successful performances at England youth level.

Not only did the under-20s win the World Cup last weekend, lifting the biggest international trophy England have won since 1966, but the under-17s reached the final of the European Championships that Wilson was withdrawn from.

An England under-21s team also retained the Toulon Tournament this summer.

Downing will have highly-rated Fulham teenager Ryan Sessegnon and Villa’s Easah Suliman in his ranks, but he will not be able to call upon Field.
