Tyler Roberts will always hold Shrewsbury Town in his heart

The talented young attacker will be well remembered for his six-month stint at Greenhous Meadow, where he captured the imagination of supporters.

Having turned 18 just days before his loan move from West Brom, Roberts was keen to sample senior football with Paul Hurst’s side following a spell with Oxford where he failed to start a league game.

Roberts chalked up four goals and two assists in 12 appearances, playing a pivotal part in Town avoiding the League One drop.

And the striking prodigy hailed the spirit in Town’s camp.

“Shrewsbury Town definitely has a place in my heart now, it’s one of my most enjoyable and successful times in football,” said the Wales youth international, who has trained with Gareth Bale and the first-team squad. “It was definitely an enjoyable loan spell. I’ve gone there to get more game time, to play and start games and I was allowed to do that.

“The club as a whole are very good. I was only there under Paul Hurst and it was a very positive environment from the start and I always felt the club would stay up. It was a good feeling.”

Roberts’s electric displays, before an injury abruptly ended his season, saw him win the young player of the season award, voted for by Town’s management staff.

The attacker built up a fond relationship with the Meadow faithful and revealed they gave him encouragement to find the net.

“It was a big honour for me and my family to pick up the young player of the year award and I’d like to thank everyone at Shrewsbury,” he added.

“It was good getting the goals and they helped with getting my confidence up and the fans supporting me – they gave me the confidence to go out and score a goal in every game.”

Town have not yet received any clarity as to whether Roberts will be available for another League One loan next term, with the Baggies expected to make a decision in pre-season.
