The Baggies, who host Southampton on Saturday, are on course for a top half finish club record points haul in the Premier League.

With the division’s big guns having reasserted their dominance this season, Pulis knows it will take a lot of effort in the long-term for Albion to improve on their current position of eighth and sees strong recruitment during the transfer window as key.

“We need at least five or six players to come in and improve the club,” he said. “That’s the aim and it’s not just one position.

“We have to keep pushing on. There’s definitely areas we have to strengthen and that’s all over the pitch not just in one place.”

He continued: “We know what we want. Whether we can get it or fill those slots with with the players we want is another thing.

“The important thing is not just getting good players in, but getting good characters and the right types of player in.

“We want people to come in and work as hard as the players who have been here are doung and give us a bit more quality.

“It’s such a small pool we’re fishing in that it can be very difficult and very draining.

“But I’ve been in this position before and you’ve got to do your best to get the best you can afford.”

Albion host Southampton, who sit one place behind them in the table, at The Hawthorns tomorrow. Pulis is hopeful winger Matt Phillips will be fit to start after two months out with a hamstring injury.

“Once you get that point where you can see yourself being safe then you have different aims,” said Pulis.

“And we’re pushing our players to achieve those as quickly as we possibly can.

“If you achieve it then you’re after the next and the next.

“It’s important to understand we as a group we went to win every game and to perform in every game.

“I think we showed that against Arsenal and United that the players haven’t go their flip-flops on yet.”
