The ex-Baggies manager takes over from Owen Coyle, who left the club earlier this week, and has signed an 18-month deal at Ewood Park.

The 53-year-old previously guided West Brom to promotion into the Premier League in 2008, before seeing his side relegated the following season.

He eventually left the Hawthorns for Celtic, before stints in charge of Middlesbrough and Coventry City.

The former Albion boss now faces the task of guiding Blackburn to Championship survival, with the club just one place from bottom, three points from safety.

He will be assisted by David Lowe, who makes the step up from Blackburn's head of academy coaching, while former Rovers favourite David Dunn will take on the role of first-team coach.
