Dave Kemp: West Brom need to stay steady

Assistant boss Dave Kemp believes a steady game-by-game approach will help keep the wheels on Albion's season.

The Baggies exceeded expectations over the first half of the campaign and currently sit eighth in the Premier League.

With 29 points from 21 games, they are firmly on course to surpass the club's previous best points tally of 49, yet Kemp insists there is no chance they will be getting ahead of themselves.

"You can't go round thinking like that," he said. "You take each day as it comes, whether it's training or Saturday. That's the way it always is.

"The moment you start looking too far ahead, the wheels will come off. We've got to keep doing what we're doing, concentrate on the day to day."

Albion were beaten 4-0 by Tottenham on Saturday but have the chance to get back on track this weekend when they host struggling Sunderland at The Hawthorns, where they have won four of their last five league fixtures.

It begins a run of games against teams currently below them in the table, with a transfer deadline day trip to Middlesbrough rounding off the month.

Yet having seen their team knocked out of the FA Cup by Derby less than a fortnight ago, Kemp has admitted he and head coach Tony Pulis will be taking nothing for granted.

"You don't get carried away in this business," said Kemp. "There's a shock just around the corner in football, as we found against Derby.

"We think we're riding high and Derby come here and beat us. I don't think that was us taking the foot off the gas, it was just one of those disappointing games. We need to apply ourselves in every game and if we do that we'll have a decent points tally."
