Matt Phillips catching the eye at West Brom
New-boy Matt Phillips has impressed the West Brom coaching staff so far and now he's been urged to start finding the net.
The 25-year-old winger has looked lively in pre-season since his £5million switch from Championship side Queens Park Rangers.
He had a curling long-range effort pushed around the post at Kidderminster and another chance smothered by the Vitesse goalkeeper in Arnhem.
Assistant head coach Dave Kemp has been pleased with how quickly Phillips has settled into the team, both on and off the pitch.
And he's hoping that sooner rather than later, he sticks one of his chances away.
Kemp said: "He's mixed in great, he looks one of the lads already. You don't start judging people until we start playing the season, but we've been very pleased with him.
"Matty's a good player, one we've been aware of for a long time, and we're pleased to have him here.
"We're going to need his pace and power. Hopefully he can score some goals as well. He's got a good goalscoring record, we want him to bring that to the team."
Phillips is no stranger to the net, having grabbed eight goals for QPR last season.
Kemp and head coach Tony Pulis hope he will be able to chip in next season and help striker Salomon Rondon.
The Venezuelan ended last season with two goals in his last two games and had a successful Copa America too, firing his country to the quarter-finals.
He's picked up where he left off in pre-season, smacking a sumptuous free-kick into the top corner against Arnhem, and Kemp predicted a big season for the South American.
Kemp said: "This is his first pre-season with us. He came in late last season and still did pretty well.
"But, with that under his belt and this pre-season, you're hoping he's going to make a big impact."
At the moment, there's a lot of responsibility resting on Rondon's shoulders.
Saido Berahino looks destined for the exit door and 34-year-old Rickie Lambert had a disappointing first season in Albion stripes.
It's a precarious situation right now and the club are hoping to sign two new strikers this summer, so they are not so heavily reliant on their No 9.
Kemp admitted: "We need people in all positions, but certainly in that position. Not only do you want good players, but you want competition for places as well.
"We've got to try and get ourselves in that position, if we're going to be successful."
Albion are also in talks with Brighton about the possibility of bringing centre-back Lewis Dunk to the Hawthorns.
At first glance, it's not an area that needs strengthening, but Kemp explained that a club of Albion's size needs to take good deals when they see them.
He said: "We're always looking in every position, that's what you have to do. We can't just say we need one of those and one of those.
"You're trying to improve the squad all the time, that's football, not just at West Brom, but at every club.
"We're not cherry picking like Manchester United and Chelsea, if good players become available we've got to think about signing them."
