West Brom's Pepe Mel: I don't know where I'll be next season
Pepe Mel today claimed victory against Tottenham on Saturday would leave Albion all-but safe from relegation – but hinted his own future at The Hawthorns is uncertain.
The Spaniard, who led his side to three points at Norwich on Saturday, believes another win against Spurs would leave them on the brink of securing survival.
But Mel left his own future beyond the summer open to debate when he admitted: "I don't know where I'm going to be next season." The unexpected answer, which came in response to a question about the future of Carrow Road match-winner Morgan Amalfitano, was Mel's clearest hint yet that he might not remain at The Hawthorns even if he leads the Baggies to safety.
Mel did not elaborate on his own future or his hopes of signing loanee Amalfitano permanently, but he had earlier spoken about the challenge of adapting to life in England.
"It's a different country, a different language," he said. "I said I would try to meet the objective when I arrived and that's what is taking place."
Saturday's 1-0 victory left the Baggies level with Norwich and five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of the clash with Spurs.
Mel, who could be boosted by the return of Billy Jones, Chris Brunt and Claudio Yacob at the weekend, said: "It's very important. If we are capable of beating Tottenham nearly everything will be resolved because there will be very little time left. We need a good week and the Tottenham match is very important because three points more would be very important."
