West Brom boss Steve Clarke believes former mentor Jose Mourinho could eventually manage Manchester United.

The Hawthorns head coach admitted he missed Mourinho's victory over United with Real Madrid this week to watch a Championship game, believed to be Leeds's 1-1 draw at Leicester.

But he exchanged messages with his former Chelsea boss – who said the world would stop for Tuesday's Old Trafford clash – and insisted the Portuguese could one day manage United.

"I sent him a text before the game wishing him good luck and told him that, although the world would be watching, I wouldn't because I was going to watch a Championship game!" joked Clarke.

"Certainly, when you look at his track record and the clubs he has been at, United is one of the clubs he could manage.

"He's under contract at Real Madrid. Over the Christmas period they had a rocky patch but they have turned it around quite well.

"They have beaten Barcelona twice and turned over Manchester United to put them in the last eight of the Champions League.

"I'm sure Jose now is focused on winning the Champions League for a third team in a third different country."
