Reading 3 West Brom 2 - match report
Shell-shocked Albion were guilty of an amazing giveaway as they squandered a 2-0 lead in the final nine minutes to struggling Reading.
The Baggies dominated for 81 minutes and a goal in each half by Romelu Lukaku – this eighth and ninth of the season – looked to have given them a routine win.
But a goal by Jimmy Kebe and then an equaliser from the penalty spot by Adam Le Fondre left Steve Clarke's men stunned.
And in the final minute Pavel Pogrebnyak claimed a barely believable, scrappy winner, although it may be recorded as an own-goal.
Albion started on the back-foot but, despite some good possession from Reading, they were unable to test Ben Foster in the Baggies goal in the opening 15 minutes.
Lukaku threatened to open up the Royals on 16 minutes but he was flagged offside as he raced onto James Morrison's through-ball.
And Albion carved open the home side again when Jerome Thomas, making his first start under Clarke, fed the overlapping George Thorne on the right and his cross found Morrison.
But Morrison's firm shot was stopped well by scrambling Royals keeper Adam Federici.
However, more poor home defending brought the Albion opener on 19 minutes with a move started and finished by Lukaku.
He chested down a clearance and released Morrison before racing into the box to tap home the midfielder's cross.
And it could have got better for Albion when George Thorne's fine diagonal ball found Lukaku in the box but he could not control it under pressure from Adrian Mariappa.
Reading's first attempt on goal came on 31 minutes when captain Jobi McAnuff headed straight at Ben Foster.
Five minutes before the interval Albion were almost caught napping when Reading's Jimmy Kebe raced onto a long ball but his poor touch allowed Billy Jones to make a saving interception.
Within seconds of the second half starting Albion had another sight of goal when Thomas stretched to poke the ball through to Lukaku, but he was denied by Mariappa's crucial challenge.
And Lukaku then had a 'goal' ruled out when he was correctly flagged offside.
Reading should have levelled on 55 minutes when Kebe's cross from the right ricocheted to half-time substitute Gareth McCleary at the far post but his effort was blocked by Jones.
And seconds later Albion were denied a second goal by the woodwork and Morrison burst down the left and crossed for Lukaku, who saw his glancing header strike the far post.
Lukaku was denied by the woodwork for a second time when he was picked out by another cross by Morrison and hammered a shot against the crossbar.
But he would not be denied a second goal and it arrived when the Baggies broke through Morrison from a Reading corner.
The midfielder fed Lukaku, who beat Mariappa and whacked a low shot into the bottom corner past a poor attempted save by Federici.
Albion looked dominant but the hosts threw themselves a lifeline with eight minutes remaining.
McCleary's cross from the left evaded everyone in the box and was headed in at the far post by Kebe.
And they levelled with a minute remaining when Olsson's clumsy high knee on Kebe resulted in a Reading penalty.
Substitute Le Fondre stepped up to equalise from the spot.
And there was still time for a grandstand finish as the Royals completed a remarkable turnaround.
Ian Harte's free-kick was headed on by Alex Pearce and appeared to loop in off an Albion defender with Pavel Pogrebnyak taking the congratulations.
