Albion saw off their Hawthorns curse by hammering the Black Cats as Peter Odemwingie scored twice in a stylish demolition of Sunderland.
The Baggies chalked up their first home Premier League win since November and just their third of the season with James Morrison and Keith Andrews also on target.
The result rarely looked in doubt from the moment Odemwingie followed up his Black Country derby hat-trick against Wolves by giving Roy Hodgson's men a third-minute lead.
It was 2-0 by half-time thanks to Morrison with Odemwingie making it 3-0 and Andrews marking his full debut with a stoppage-time goal as Albion made it nine goals in their last two games.
Albion started on the front foot and their positive approach almost paid off in the second minute when Jerome Thomas's cross was helped back across goal by Odemwingie but Andrews arrived from midfield a fraction too late to apply the finishing touch.
But they were in front a minute later courtesy of a well-worked goal.
Thomas and Liam Ridgewell combined neatly on the left to tee up Youssouf Mulumbu, whose inswinging cross was glanced him by Odemwingie, who had nipped ahead of Kieran Richardson.
Albion continued to look sharper in every area of the field and they dominated the half without working Black Cats keeper Simon Mignolet enough.
And they could have been punished by a rare Sunderland break 11 minutes before the interval when Phil Bardsley's right-wing cross found James McClean at the far post but the youngster could not direct a shot on target.
But Albion responded to that scare by winning a free-kick in a dangerous area, and when Morrison delivered onto the head of Olsson, Mignolet had to scramble back to make a save.
A minute later Mulumbu's clever flick released Morrison, who side-stepped two challenges before seeing his goal-bound drive beaten away by Mignolet.
But four minutes from the interval it was finally 2-0 with another move that featured Ridgewell and Thomas prominently.
Thomas delivered a left-footed cross that eluded Odemwingie in the six-yard box but was headed in by Morrison, steaming in beyond the striker.
It could have been 3-0 before the break but Fortune saw a firm shot deflected for a corner brilliantly by Richardson.
Sunderland started the second half at a higher tempo and could have reduced the arrears within two minutes when Mulumbu lost possession to Craig Gardner, whose powerful shot swerved late and was held well by Ben Foster.
But the visitors were caught with too many men forwards as the Baggies made it 3-0 on the break on 48 minutes.
Foster's throw found James Morrison, who fed Marc-Antoine Fortune in the box.
He cut inside and tried to pick out Morrison but his cross found Odemwingie instead and the striker blasted home from 15 yards.
It might have been 4-0 moments later when some fine trickery from Thomas created some space and his chip rebounded off the crossbar with Mignolet beaten.
Another superb long-range effort from Gardner brought an equally good save from Foster as the Black Cats strived desperately for a way back into the game.
At the other end Mignolet had to make a smart save to keep out Morrison's shot with Fortune's follow-up cleared off the line by Michael Turner.
And Turner headed wide for Sunderland in the closing stages for the Black Cats.
In stoppage-time the rout was complete as Morrison, Fortune and Graham Dorrans comnined to tee up Andrews, who curled a shot into the top corner.
