West Brom's youngsters suffered late heartbreak as they bowed out of the FA Youth Cup in the last 16 at The Hawthorns.

The Baggies were two minutes away from forcing extra-time after Aaron Birch's 85th-minute goal cancelled out Steven Hewitt's successful 15th-minute penalty.

But the Clarets booked their place in the quarter-finals when Seamus McCartan struck the winner from a corner on 88 minutes.

Early on Albion's David Goldsmith had a volley from Mani O'Sullivan's left-wing cross blocked by Burnley skipper Thomas Anderson.

The Clarets threatened in the 13th minute as Adam Evans combined well with Luke Conlan down the left before seeing his goalbound effort from just inside the box blocked by Donervon Daniels.

And moments later Albion keeper Jack Rose was at full stretch low to his left to palm away Hewitt's curling free-kick.

From the resultant corner Tom Turton was adjudged to have tripped McCartan in the box and Hewitt stepped up to drill home the penalty. McCartan blazed over from 15 yards for Burnley before Adil Nabi did likewise for the Baggies.

Aryn Williams had to make a desperate clearance for Burnley to keep out Alex Jones' shot after it squirmed through the grasp of keeper Joshua Cook.

Two minutes later another fine chance arrived when Nabi headed O'Sullivan's cross over from six yards.

The home side finally cashed in on their second-half superiority in the 85th minute as Birch stole in to head home substitute Bradley Garmston's left-wing cross.

But, just three minutes later, Hewitt found McCartan from a short corner and he blasted the ball into the top corner.
