England boss' swipe at Ben Foster
England boss Fabio Capello has taken a swipe at Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster – demanding his players have pride in their shirts as a minimum requirement for duty.
England boss Fabio Capello has taken a swipe at Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster – demanding his players have pride in their shirts as a minimum requirement for duty.
Capello has been left in the tricky position of spending the past week hoping first-choice goalkeeper Joe Hart does not pick up an injury ahead of tonight's Euro 2012 qualifier in Bulgaria.
With uncapped duo David Stockdale and Frankie Fielding acting as Hart's deputies following the withdrawal of Robert Green through injury, England are without any experienced cover for the Manchester City star.
It seems as though England got through this engagement but, with further tests to come against Wales on Tuesday and a likely Group G decider in Montenegro next month, Capello can only lament the decisions of both Foster and Paul Robinson not to make themselves available for their country.
The words seem to be aimed at Foster, who has opted to put club before country.
Capello said: "It is important for all the players who stay with us to be proud to wear the English shirt.
"I didn't speak to Ben Foster about this squad, but my general manager Franco Baldini did. I met him when he stayed with us the last time.
"I played in the team. I played as a reserve. I was proud to wear the Italian shirt."
