West Bromwich Albion fans today headed to Sunderland on 40 free coaches laid on by the club.

An army of 2,000 fans gathered at The Hawthorns early today for the long journey to the North East in the hope of securing three vital points.

Supporters snapped up every seat on the coaches more than a week in advance.

Up to 3,000 fans in total were expected to make the round trip of more than 400 miles to get behind Roy Hodgson's men.

Coaches set off from the East Stand car park from 9am with hundreds gathering up to an hour beforehand. It is the 10th time in nine seasons the club has offered free travel to reward the Albion faithful's loyal support.

Supporters praised the decision which ensured a large following for an important fixture in the Premier League survival battle. Student Tom Hughes, aged 17, of Mount Pleasant, Kingswinford, said: "It is a good idea as it encourages more fans to come. The support we get is phenomenal, and it helps to make a difference."

Machine setter Jim Crump, 49, of St Francis Close, Pelsall, said: "It is a fantastic offer and makes it more affordable for people to get to away games."

Student Tom Sinar, 17, of Nanaimo Way, Kingswinford, said: "It is one of our most important games of the season, and to have such a huge following creates a better atmosphere."
