Impressive Albion cruised to a comfortable 3-1 win over wretched Newcastle to move back into the Premier League's top 10, writes Nick Mashiter.

Somen Tchoyi and Peter Odemwingie's double handed Roberto Di Matteo's men a deserved win as they bossed their visitors.

Peter Lovenkrands' injury time consolation did little to dampen the Baggies' spirits.

The win sent the Baggies seventh for a short time before Sunderland beat West Ham – seven points above the drop zone – as they hit back from their mid-week Carling Cup exit at Ipswich.

Di Matteo made one change from Albion's last Premier League outing – the impressive 4-1 win at Everton – with Tchoyi replacing the suspended Youssouf Mulumbu.

Albion forced the early pace but despite a dominant opening they failed to create any serious chances – until Paul Scharner blasted Chris Brunt's deep corner over after 12 minutes.

The Magpies were struggling and Tchoyi charged down Sol Campbell's 20th minute clearance to set Odemwingie away only for the striker to shoot wide.

But the miss inspired Newcastle and Shola Ameobi headed over Danny Guthrie's corner after 25 minutes.

It was a stark reminder Albion needed to find the killer touch after such domination and they heeded the warning on 32 minutes when Tchoyi fired them ahead.

Jerome Thomas found Brunt 20-yards out who rode Gutierrez's challenge and fed Tchoyi on the edge of the box.

The Cameroon international cut inside Jose Enrique and curled in an exquisite effort past Tim Krul.

It was a deserved lead and Tchoyi and almost added a second four minutes later when he forced Krul into a sharp near post save after neat play by Gonzalo Jara and Odemwingie

The only disappointment at the break was Albion were only 1-0 ahead as Newcastle were there for the taking.

The Baggies were keen to kill off the Magpies and went close two minutes after the restart when Steven Taylor deflected Thomas' cross onto the roof of the net.

But Scott Carson came to the rescue after 51 minutes when he blocked Taylor's powerful header from Wayne Routledge's cross.

Albion's lead, while deserved, was precarious and Scharner should have done better than to sky Brunt's corner over soon after.

And he almost paid for the miss on the hour when Gutierrez burst onto Andy Carroll's flick and ran through. Scharner executed a perfected recovery tackle but Marek Cech had to clear off the line as the ball spun towards goal.

Newcastle were starting to force the issue and only a touch from Carson stopped Lovenkrands nodding in Carroll's cross on 65 minutes.

James Morrison tested Krul and shot wide before Albion got their crucial second on 72 minutes.

Guthrie, under little pressure, was robbed by Odemwingie who arrowed towards goal. The striker looked to have wasted the chance after being challenged by Taylor and Campbell but engineered enough space to find the corner from eight yards.

Newcastle's woes were compounded as Guthrie was stretchered off after falling awkwardly in the build-up to the goal.

Albion were on cruise control and Odemwingie bagged his second a minute from time when he latched onto Cech's long ball, rounded Krul and found the net.

Lovenkrands bagged an injury time consolation after Carson saved from Carroll but Albion were well worth the points.
