Albion captain Scott Carson has defended himself against criticism for his part in Manchester United's opener during Saturday's 2-2 Old Trafford draw.

The Baggies goalkeeper spilled a free-kick from Nani with Javier Hernandez netting the rebound for the first goal of the game.

Carson said: "Their first goal was a bit unfortunate because it's all down to the offside rule and interpretation.

"Anderson stood behind the wall in what looked like an offside position and was blocking off my view of Nani taking the free-kick.

"I asked the referee the question about it and he said that because the free-kick was so far out from goal it shouldn't matter, which I find a bit strange.

"What it meant is that, although the free-kick was 30 yards out, I didn't see it until it was about 18 yards out.

"I was reasonably pleased with getting down to save it, but I couldn't get it away enough so unfortunately it fell nicely for Hernandez and he tucked it away."
