FA Cup: Walsall 2 Bolton 1 - Report

Jamie Jellis scored a dramatic stoppage time winner as Walsall shocked League One side Bolton Wanderers with a 2-1 victory at Bescot in the FA Cup first round.

Josh Sheehan opened the scoring for the visitors 10 minutes after the break when he curled his free-kick into the top corner.

Former Bolton wing-back Liam Gordon quickly restored parity with a thunderous volley beyond Luke Southwood on the hour-mark.

Jellis delivered the decisive moment in the first minute of stoppage time as he kept his composure to coolly slot into the bottom corner.

That result put Walsall's name in the FA Cup second round draw for the fourth season in a row.Mat Sadler made two changes from the goalless draw at Accrington Stanley last week as Jack Earing and Albert Adomah replaced Charlie Lakin and Jamille Matt.Walsall had the first chance inside the opening minute when Jellis' low shot from Liam Gordon's low cutback flashed just wide of the target.

Tommy Simkin prevented Dion Charles from handing the visitors the lead when he spread himself wide to keep the Bolton frontman out from close-range.Bolton continued to knock on the door and came as close as ever when George Johnston crashed his free header on to the post from Jay Matete's cross.

Josh Sheehan's shot rippled into the side netting before Jellis came agonisingly close at the other end when his low finish deflected narrowly wide of the target after Harry Williams' long throw created a golden chance.

The Saddlers had two chances in quick succession as they ended the first half strongly. Connor Barrett cushioned Jellis' cross down to the back post for Adomah but his volley was cleared off the line before Lowe headed over moments later.

Jellis continued to be at the heart of the action and came close once again with a low drive which whistled just wide of the target on the cusp of half-time.Walsall started brightly in the second period as Lowe came within inches of getting a toe to Adomah's low cutback. 

But Bolton found the breakthrough ten minutes after the restart when Sheehan curled a delightful free-kick beyond the reach of Simkin and into the top corner from 25 yards out.Liam Gordon scored his first goal of the season to equalise against his former employers on the hour. 

Simkin pumped a long ball forward and the ball was eventually worked into the penalty area for the Guyana international to rifle a ruthless volley beyond Luke Southwood.

Walsall had the momentum after hauling themselves level and Jellis came within a lick of paint away from scoring a decider when his scooped effort struck the cheek of the post.Harry Williams took a heavy blow to the head when he crashed into the advertising hoardings and had to be replaced by club captain Donervon Daniels.

George Hall was also introduced for the closing stages and Walsall intensified the pressure late on with Taylor Allen and Barrett drawing smart saves from Southwood with dangerous efforts from distance.  

In the first of nine additional minutes, Simkin floated the ball long for Lowe to cushion down and slot into the path of Jellis. 

he midfielder drove into the penalty area and applied a calm finish into the bottom corner to prompt wild scenes inside Bescot.Next, Walsall will return to league action when they welcome Crewe Alexandra to Bescot next Saturday.
