‘Mystery man’ Jorge Leitao’s secret Walsall stormer
Jorge Leitao was described as the ‘mystery man’ by the papers the morning after Walsall’s 3-1 victory over Raith Rovers in 2000.
The then unknown Portuguese forward had scored two headers, before forcing an own goal for the Saddlers’ third.
Walsall had treated the pre-season tour of Scotland with great secrecy. A trio of trialists travelled with them across the border, and Leitao was a stand-out performer.
“The new man certainly pleased the 30 or so Saddlers fans at Stark’s Park, who gave him a big hand when he came off at half-time,” wrote the Express & Star.
But while Leitao lapped up the love from his new adoring audience, former Walsall director of football Paul Taylor made a quick dash for the changing room.
